Special thanks goes out to Getrude and her great question about barriers to effective communication. How can improper communication networks be a barrier to effective communication ?
This question is open to a lot of different angles like everyday communicating. So with that being said I will look at from a business or workplace point of view.
First of all what are improper communication networks ?
In my opinion social media websites like facebook, tweeter, etc. can nave a negative effect on business communication process. Now I have nothing against social media sites and I also use them often. Many businesses also use them as marketing sales tools. I really think that these sites still have an untapped potential and the sky's the limit.
How they act as a barrier to effective communication.
The major problem of social media sites is the way people use them. Some people can't go 30 minutes without checking them. So they can be an office distraction. Sometimes people post stuff they shouldn't have. These things may get themselves or others in the office in trouble.
Workplace culture has always been fragile and will continue to always be that way. Social media sites will only make the fragile state worse. The biggest problem that social media sites have created is the opinions of people who don't use them. They just don't understand what they're about. They just see people buried in cellphones, ipods, etc. Time being wasted and the elimination of face to face interactions. Some people even say its just rude. So the bottom line is this until companies can find a way to deal with the issues that social media sites create. Then these sites will be a barrier to effective communication.

Communicating concerns, problems, issues or just your unhappiness can be difficult to accomplish correctly. Many times a manager or supervisor feels the need to yell or explode to make a point. This technique is uneffective and counterproductive. The only result you will gain from this is unhappy and angry workers. It will destroy morale and limit your motivating options. The best choice of action is to talk calmly but at the same time making it clear that you are unhappy. Don't be that leader who everyone says is out of control and needs anger management classes. Yes your job maybe stressful so when the next time you feel like yelling count to ten take a deep breath. It may be hard to do, but the benifits will be plentiful.

Here is a simple and easy way to motivate your employees. Lets say you are short with help for the work. You already know you most likely will not complete your weeks project on time. Tell your team that they will have the opportunity to get extra hours. Tell them that opportunity will only be available to a few as you will not be needing the entire team. Make it clear that the opportunity will be only given to the workers that show solid performance. This little trick will make up some ground due to staffing issues. The end result will still allow you to finish close to your deadline, as well as your employees feeling good about picking up some extra money if they shall choose to.
